But outside one’s country, national identity is likely to be part of the answer. Sometimes Canadians seem obsessed with what it means to be a Canadian, which is often defined as being different from the United States. Over the past few years, the British have become more concerned with what it means to be British or, alternatively, English, Scottish, or Welsh, with a number of books published on these subjects.

At the same time, it is essential that we evaluate ideologies and differentiate among them, and that evaluation needs to be based on something reliable. Evaluation cannot be based simply on belief or the lack of belief, although some people find that sufficient. For other people the answer is found in trying, as objectively as possible, to measure the effects of ideologies on human beings or, to include the most radical environmentalists, on the natural order as a whole.
