The infant needs to experience his or her caregiver as receptive to what the infant finds unmanageable (including “nameless dread”), in order that the infant can receive back such feelings, now digested by the caregiver, in a manageable, contained form. What is true for infants is also true for many adult psychotherapy patients. In order for a patient to assimilate and come to manage the unmanageable, he or she has to experience the therapist as able to deal with the mental contents in question—that is, experiences such as those of not-knowing, dread, or aggression.

Projective identification is rather different. It concerns an unconscious action of ridding oneself of—and often, communicating—feelings by locating them in someone else. For instance, a narcissistic person can locate the more dependent and vulnerable aspects of him/ herself in others, so that they become the dependent and potentially abandoned ones. The meaning of “locate” is complex here, because the feelings in question still belong to the patient, even if the therapist feels in accordance with what the patient might or should be feeling for him/herself.

We do not have a “theory” of minds, as current fashion in psychological theorizing would have us believe. What is important for psychotherapy is that from this starting-point, one can elaborate in much more detail how it is that at any given moment, one person’s subjective experience is so intimately and complexly linked with that of a communicative partner. The psychotherapeutic encounter is framed in order to give the psychotherapist the best chance to register and understand his or her subjective experience in relation to a patient.
