In relation to moral philosophy he sides with Skinner, and against Pocock, in situating Aristotle alongside Plato as an enthusiast for contemplative virtue. Yet Nelson’s second suggestion is that the Greek emphasis upon contemplation need not stand in the way of the notion of a Greek classical republicanism. Classical republicanism and civic humanism should not be conflated: the latter is only one type of the former. Nelson’s account of an alternative ‘Greek tradition’ has two bases. The first is Platonic contemplative metaphysics (and in Aristotle’s relegation here to the status of vehicle for the same, Pocock and Rahe’s Graeco-Roman synthesis gives way to a Greek synthesis).
