He started with the team and played in the Super Bowl. Perhaps that might have been me,’’ Pottruck said. Rather than wallow in disappointment, Pottruck channeled his energies in a new direction: getting a graduate degree in business from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His career plan—driven by a desire, as he recalled, to ‘‘do good in the world’’—was to go into hospital administration. His mother, no doubt, also influenced his choice. After marrying young, she attended college to earn her undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing while Pottruck and his brothers were growing up.

5 billion. ) Meanwhile, Dunn’s accomplishments attracted increasing media attention. In 1999, Fortune magazine had listed Patricia Dunn, then aged forty-six, as number eleven on its list of the ‘‘50 Most Powerful Women’’ for that year. The list contained a who’s who of women in the corporate ranks. In the number one spot was Carly Fiorina, then CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Reflecting on her leadership through her many years at Wells Fargo and then Barclays, Dunn emphasized the requisite qualities of trust, integrity, and accountability—not just for herself, but also for every person in the industry.

As the head of all consumer marketing and advertising at Shearson, Pottruck produced the results, but admitted he lacked the ‘‘political skills’’ that would have won him more supporters among his peers. ‘‘I was a bull in a china shop, a hard-working guy and somewhat intimidating. I had great support from the people who worked for me, and I had incredibly supportive bosses. Those who were my peers couldn’t stand me. Partially it was because I was so successful that I was threatening. But a lot of it was because I was a jerk,’’ he admitted.
