Cables are discussed in Chapter 9. Understanding W ANs A wide area network (WAN) is a collection of LANs connected to one another with a WAN technology or with the Internet, allowing it to function as one large network. In the previous section, the impracticality of a company strung together by private Ethernet lines from one office to another was mentioned. Above and beyond the cable length issue, there would be issues of where to place the cables and how to maintain them. The solutions that are available are as follows : • Leasing a WAN connection from a telecommunications company • Using the Internet When a WAN connection is leased from a telecommunications provider, the company offloads all maintenance and simply uses the existing network that the telecommunication provider built.
Layer 5 adds information required to create a session between the web server and the web browser on the laptop. • Layer 4 adds the transport protocol and the source and destination port numbers, in this case TCP (it's a unicast) and port 80 (HTTP). 5. 2. • Layer 2learns the destination MAC address and adds the source and destination MAC addresses, in this case, a source of 5-5-5-5-5-5 and destination of 6-6-6-6-6-6. • Layer 1 converts the entire package into bits and sends it across the network to the laptop.
MAC addresses are not the only type of layer 2 (Data-Link layer) addresses. An example of a WAN protocol, Frame Relay , uses layer 2 addresses called Data-Link Connection Identifiers (DLCis) to identify endpoints in a Frame Relay network. Although they look quite different from MAC addresses, they serve the same purpose. M I WAN protocols such as Frame Relay and their characteristics such as DLCis are beyond the scope of this book. Just as the Network layer identifies the IP address and labels the package with it, the Data-Link layer must do the same for the MAC address.
