The ways that modernity has been framed by a secularised Protestant culture within Northern Europe and the United States has tended to shape the universal terms through which other cultures have learnt to understand themselves. Through being presented in universal terms as ‘scientific’, these modernities have often worked to undermine the significance of religion and traditional culture. In the terms of a secular modernity religious traditions have been conceived as a form of ‘backwardness’ that inevitably gives way to the advances of reason.

If, in Catholic traditions, people feel that they have been ‘born into sin’ and that they carry a sense of guilt since learning that Christ died ‘for their sins’, it can be difficult to break with these feelings, even if they have been questioned intellectually. People might feel a sense of guilt that they no longer relate to their Catholic formation. This forms an unease and intensity in bodies which shape sexual relationships. Relations to time and temporality are formed differently within the Catholic tradition, which allows for confession and so for a new histories, cultures, religions beginning.

Benjamin has helped to question notions of evolutionary progress that have been taken for granted in temporalities within the human sciences. Sacrifices and cruelties in the past have been legitimated in the name of a brighter future, echoing Christian visions of redemption, in which present sacrifice brings salvation in a world to come.
